Man's Best Friend

I'd say I'm a pretty open-minded person. I like to really experience different cultures, and not be afraid or judgmental when confronted with something I'm unaccustomed to, no matter how foreign it is to me. I've adapted to a lot of things during my stay in China - people spitting everywhere, pushing rudely, speaking all too honestly (to the point Westerners would consider tactless), the list goes on. I've tried a lot of new things too - pig heart, chicken heart, chicken stomach, tree ear, durian, sea cucumber, prickly ash, snake, and even silkworm. Sure, it can be difficult and off-putting at times, but this is a huge part of Chinese culture so why shouldn't I give it a shot?

Well, today I added to the list. Probably the most controversial item.....I ate dog.

I'm sure many people will be appalled, and that's fine, go ahead and shake your head while giving me a good tsk tsk. But I'm okay with it. I knew I'd try it at one point. My Chinese friend ordered it, and the thing that struck me the most wasn't that she was going to eat dog, but that she seemed to be a bit wary of doing it in front of me, like she was worried I'd be judging her. And really, it didn't bother me a bit, I just felt bad that she felt the need to justify herself in front of me. So I tried a bit. It was...different.

Anyway, that's my news, I figured it was blogworthy.

Mmm...Scooby snack

Oh come on, it's not like we went down to the humane society and handpicked our lunch!

LOL!!! You are too funny.I must admit that although I wouldn\'t SEEK dog out if I were in China, I probably would have eaten it without my knowledge. In fact, thinking back to my stay in Mexico, it\'s theoretically possible I already have! :pStill gross though....lolBut good on you for involving yourself in the culture. I think that\'s important as a visitor in a foreign country, and I only wish some of Canada\'s visitors would attempt some more customary "Canadian" traditions as well.

Wow. Dog. Tastes like chicken? Apparently everything does these days. The most exotic meat-thing I\'ve eaten has been goat... also a whole plate of chicken hearts once. (But I really didn\'t keep track of everything going into my mouth in Mexico or Nigeria so who knows what I may have downed?) Being an Alberta-girl I prefer beef to just about everything though! Hehe.Good on you for trying new things.

thanks for coming by my site again :) And yeh, I like Kurt, he is a very talented skater, I just wouldn\'t say he is one of my favourites, not sure why, just something loL! And you are right, def don\'t have to skate to appreciate it. I skate a little bit, but not very much at all.

as i read that i pictured an east indian boy writing to his pals, hidden beneath his blanket - flashlight on - pen a frenzy. "now, i know cows are sacred and we would never do this back home but......." lol. i guess i can handle the idea of someone maybe taking a little nibble off of dog strip and tasting it with some dip - to appreciate or respect culture. ok. ugh *grimace* yeah, but - im thinking if u told me that u hauled off and had a grilled up ground doggie burger with cheese hold the pickle, i may have had to have excused myself. God....why do we think its ok to eat cows and lamb but consider taking rover out to thaw instead of for a walk is so uncivilized.......we are a strange bunch.yuck - we\'re gross. (what DID it taste like?) (rabbit right? im right, right? gross.)
