I went to an "interfaith passover seder" at a synagogue tonight. Passover is the Jewish holiday that celebrates the liberation of the Hebrews from Egyptian slavery. You know the story, Moses parting the Red Sea etc etc. The seder is a big dinner and ceremony that takes place the first 2 nights. Well, this was just a demonstration (Passover doesn't start til the 12th) and I went with my step-sister and my boss.
It was a really nice evening. So many people from all sorts of backgrounds were there. Jews, Christians, Muslims, Aboriginal, Asian, Indian... what a wonderful mosaic of people and cultures. I don't want to get overly cheesy, but there was a very sweet feeling of unity amongst everyone. Our differences were not dividing us. Rather, we were brought together in a desire to share and learn from one another. Everyone there understood that we are all equally important pieces in a much bigger puzzle. Humanity transcends faith, race, and culture.
Passover isn't just about the emancipation of the Egyptian jews all those years ago. It's about freedom. Freedom from slavery, freedom from oppression, freedom to be yourself and be accepted. And it's about freedom for all. It was a happy evening, with songs, stories, jokes, food, and a comforting sense of kinship that reached beyond those present in the synagogue to all of mankind. For a few hours, we felt connected to each other in a beautiful world not always consumed with ignorance and hate.
