things that make me happy

sometimes I like to complain. but today, for a change, I thought i'd share a few happy things. and i'll put it in bullet point form because bullet points also make me happy!
  • I went to Stars on Ice last week (yay!) and at the end of the show Kurt Browning shook my hand (YAY!!!). i practically knocked over the two little old ladies next to me in my eagerness. I wanted to tell him that i'd been coming to the show for 20 years, but couldn't utter a single word; i just shook his hand frantically while grinning like an idiot. but maybe that's ok, because when i went through my collection of Stars on Ice programs from over the years (obsessive nerd), i realized that this was only year 19. so next year i'll have to tell him :) yes, i get just as giddy and awestruck now as i did in 1994.
  • i'd been brushing up on my French lately so that i could take a "second language evaluation" at work. i was very stressed about the 45 minute oral test. I took it 2 weeks ago, on a day i was really sick, and.... I got the marks i needed, yippee! so now I've been upgraded to a bilingual employee, which means a teensy bit more money, and hopefully more opportunities. way to go, me.
  • i am in love with ataulfo mangos. they are sooooooo delicious and less than a buck each at superstore. yumyumyum!
  • we finally had some nice weather and the weekend was beautiful! i sat outside in our backyard for the first time since moving in 6 months ago, drinking a beer and reading a book in the sunshine. so content!
  • my 3 year old niece came for a sleepover and we had tons of fun doing arts & crafts and baking. plus, she is just too adorable when she's asleep. when she cuddled up to me and held my hand, i thought my heart was going to explode.
that's it for now. nothing over the top exciting, no jaw-dropping updates, just some simple things that make me smile.

quotationfingersipadwifistarbucksblahblahstuff

i'm bored, and have nothing really to talk about, so don't expect any kind of theme or common thread that holds this all together. i'm just going to do a stream of consciousness type entry. which will most likely be a mess since my thoughts are pretty lame and fragmented.

i like using quotation marks. actually, to be more accurate, i like misusing quotation marks. i don't care if it's in print or quotation fingers when talking; the more i do it, the funnier i think it is. it doesn't matter what the sentence is, just throw some quotations in there and suddenly people will wonder about your meaning. i'm thirsty, i'm going to have a glass of "juice". "juice"?? what does she mean? what is she drinking? you all wonder. yeah, i know i have you doubting the authenticity of my juice. and if you put a whole phrase in quotation marks, what out! after my "juice", i'm going to "brush my teeth". clearly this must be some cryptic euphamism! hahahahaha.  "ha".

*my mind wanders; eyes fall on a disc sitting on the desk*

so we can't figure out how to get our stupid wi-fi to work. blair's parents gave us their old one and it seemed to be set up right, but something is wrong. we turn on the ipad and our network comes up, we type in the password, it says we are connected.... but then when we try to bring up the internet, or any of the web based apps, it says we're not connected! wtf?! and the stupid ipad doesn't come with any instructions because it's just sooooooooooooo easy to use. grumble grumble. so now i have no choice but to walk across the street to starbucks to use the ipad. yeah, i'm one of those people. sipping my coffee, tapping on an ipad, showing people how cool i am. look at me, tap tap sip tap tap tap swoosh swoosh sip swoosh. maybe next time i'll also bring in some obscure text books to highlight, and wear my hair in a messy bun with a pencil in it to complete my image. yeah, i'm focused and studious, yet hip and artsy. but i'm edgy because i drink regular coffee, none of that fancy shmancy half caf extra foam soy milk chai-mocha-latte-cino crap.

*my mind makes a few rapid connections to get to....*

in high school my friend Allie and i used to have fake arguments in ATM vestibules to make the other person/people in there feel awkward. wait... i've written about that once, years ago. man, i'm so out of material i'm posting reruns? short version: we'd have non-specifics fights that even we didn't know what they were about. example:
'are we going to talk about this?'
 'i'm through talking.'
'you act like you're the victim in all this.'
'oh, and i suppose you think i'm to blame'
'drop the indignant self-righteous bullshit, you know what part you played in this mess!'
'i had no choice! YOU left me no choice!'
and so on. it was fun. but i told this story once before, so moving on.

i'm sleepy now. i just sneezed twice. the two things aren't connected... i don't think. are they? do i sneeze when i'm tired? i never really paid attention. now i'll have to pay attention to see if there's any correlation between them. i'll keep a sneeze journal. i can put together charts and graphs, mapping out the times and frequency of my sneezes, anayzling the results and determining if any patterns exist. i could do my "work" on the ipad at starbucks! see what i did there? i pulled the whole thing together.

damn, that's "good" writing.

this is not an update

oops, i've been slacking on my blogging. meh, hardly surprising. i go through phases of being all keen on writing and every little thing seems like something with anecdotal potential. and then there are the slumps when nothing seems worth mentioning. and as you can see i'm in one of these slumps.

i don't have the creative juices at the moment to jazz up my entries with charming witticisms or poignant imagery. but i do like making lists, so with the help of my trusty bullet points, here's the gist of... i dunno... stuff.
  • my little niece said she loved me, without any prompts or bribery. i almost exploded it was so cute.
  • i finally got my hair dyed so i don't look like a crazy old lady anymore. just crazy.
  • i'm currently sitting with a towel on my head and it's been on for way too long, causing my hair to dry in a chaotic mess. this is why i end up looking like a crazy person.
  • i bought a lotto ticket and didn't win. i was shocked.
  • i've taken to watching way too much junky tv for no apparent reason. even the tacky fluff shows, the cookie cutter crime shows, and the i-don't-even-find-this-remotely-funny-so-why-the-hell-am-i-watching-it shows (millionaire matchmaker, criminal minds, and the big bang theory, respectively). my mind has clearly gone to mush.
  • i bought a new book from the bargain section. hopefully this will drag me out of my reading lull.
  • my work hours have been moved back to 8-4 so i get home in time for jeopardy once again. phew, another piece of my nerd puzzle back in its place.
  • my boyfriend got an ipad2 for his birthday. so far it's just being used as a very expensive game of Angry Birds.

that's all i can think of really. and that was a stretch. but whatever, yay for pointless lists!
  • i'm ending this entry now
  • then i'm going to go get a sparkling grapefruit pop. yum yum yum.

high five phobia

it's not a real phobia, like my phobia of moths, but more of an anxiety over high fiving.

when someone raises their hand into high five position, i feel a little rush of panic. first there's the panic that i might be misreading the move, maybe they don't want to high five me, maybe it's some other hand gesture. maybe it's just a "hey" wave... or... i don't know, it's probably a high five. but then there's determining the proper high five reaction. how much weight do i put behind it? is it a hard, solid slap with a dead stop on impact? is it a gentler sweeping five with carry through? does it finish with a half hand clasp or fancy handshake type move? of course i also have to watch my aim. there's nothing more pathetic than an off centre high five. and god forbid this is a moving high five, i can't walk and high five at the same time! you expect me to perform this highly complex and nuanced move all while maintaining a cool, natural demeanour? I don't have the skills for that!!

this probably all stems from some childhood trauma, most likely traceable back to junior high. attempted high fives that drew sneers and left me hanging, or the proffered high five that was then snatched away with the inevitable "psych!". yes, those were indeed dark days of high fivery.

yeesh, they make it look so easy!

yesterday at kickboxing i was accosted with high fives. to start with, one of the guys i often chat with gave me a single, low impact high five, presumably just for showing up. not terribly executed, but i was a little off the mark. then my partner high fived me after her rounds. i wasn't expecting it, so i fumbled that one. after the exceptionally exhausting class, the first guy gave me a much more emphatic double high five, now celebrating our completion of the class. it could have been a disaster, but i was on the ball and delivered a good, sound connection. but this was too much, i wanted out of there before any more hands required slapping. but i wasn't out of the woods yet. there was a final high five with my partner as we headed out. a moving high five that transitioned into a half clasp. i thought i might barf it was such an advanced maneuver, but i pulled it off with only a slight hint of awkwardness.

no more, please. i can't take the pressure. i'm no alanis, with one hand in my pocket and the other giving a high five. i just don't have the cool chick high fivey inclination. or the coordination.

i'm not crazy, i just act that way

my mother once told me i had an addictive personality. at first i was all flattered, thinking she meant that i had such a sparkling personality, it was addictive to others. people can't get enough of me, yay me! but alas, no such luck. she just meant that i get easily addicted to things. this comment was said during my jurassic park phase. yes, i had a jurassic park phase. it's not something i'm proud of, and i'm really not sure why on earth i got so carried away, but it really was ridiculous. no, ridiculous is too much of an understatement. complete and utter nutcase obsession is a shade closer to the truth.

ah yes, i remember it so clearly. it all began with a girls' night out at the movies the night after our dreaded grade 10 physics exam....(doodleoodoodleoodoodleoo wavy lines nostalgic flashback doodleoodoodleoo)

June 11, 1993. i remember the date the film opened, so you can already see how serious this is. my friends and i saw the movie either on opening night or very shortly thereafter. the theatre was packed, everyone flinching and screaming together. it was so exciting! a friend and i immediately became infatuated. we went to see it the following weekend, racing like maniacs to the theatre, convinced that the man in the red car driving next to us was going to grab the last two seats!

from there the obsession just grew. we passed notes in class about it, we bought jurassic park trading cards and books. my collection eventually went on to include postcards, sticker books, stamps, magazines, a poster, a calendar, a viewfinder, and even "raptor bites" (disgusting, inedible hard candy). oh, and i saw the film a total of 13 times in the theatre, each viewing commemorated with a proud dinosaur stamp on my jurassic park calendar. oy. and i made my family buy their own copy of the vhs because i didn't want to share mine. what a loonietoon.

i've gone through other obsessions, although none quite as formidable as the jurassic park phase. nowadays i try to keep my - let's call them enthusiastic interests - in check. sure, i may have 15+ years of stars on ice programs stashed away, shelves full of crossword and trivia books, a collection of keychains that probably weighs more than a small child, and that viewfinder is most likely still hiding somewhere among my dusty treasures. but i also managed to part with the piles of ratty newspapers clippings about goran ivanisevic and wimbledon 2001. and i curbed my impulse to buy a second set of Buffy dvds (even though they were in a way cooler box)! see? see all the self-control??

yeah, i'm normal.

i don't have any fancy photoshop program, but that doesn't stop me :p

honey, i'm home!

don't all cheer at once now.

so regina was kind of fun. you know, as far as work goes. my hotel room was nice, the bed was huge, someone did all the cleaning and made my bed everyday, i took all the free pens they left out for me etc. the usual hotel stuff. ok, now for the lowlights and highlights:

lowlights:
  • going on a tour of "the tunnels of moosejaw". sooooooo lame. it was tacky and hokey and i swear our tour guide was about 15 years old and doing it for extra credit in his high school drama class. it's not a good sign that the tunnels were named as one of the top attactions for southern saskatchewan.
  • the moosejaw mineral spa was also disappointing. it just looked like a boring old pool. no soothing atmosphere or anything. we peered in through the giant windows and decided to hit the casino instead.
  • speaking of the casino, i put in $5 and got up to a thrilling $750, then lost it all. oh sorry, i forgot the decimal point, i meant to say i was up to $7.50. haha, fooled you
  • eating in a crappy mall's crappy food court every day.
highlights:
  • driving to Rouleau - aka Dog River - where the show Corner Gas was filmed. we walked into the town bar that advertised souvenirs and were told they only had air fresheners. we also saw the restaurant/gas station set, which was looking neglected and half buried in snow.
  • 20 oz pints! almost all the places here in Winnipeg only give chintzy 16 oz pints. at least that's one thing regina does right.
  • meeting lots of fun new people from BC to Newfoundland
  • and definitely one of the best moments was when one of my new friends said she didn't know my last name and had just been referring to me as "funny amanda". woohoo! yup, that's right, i'm funny.
anyway, i suppose that sums it up. glad to be home. winnipeg may suck, but it's good to be reminded that some places suck more.

hangin' with the cool crowd

ohmygodohmygodohmygod, one of the popular kids mentioned me on her blog! play it cool amanda, play it cool. deep breaths, shrug it off, no biggie, whatevs. no, don't say that, cool people don't say whatevs. do they? shit, i don't know what cool people say!

so i'm surfin' through the blogs i read when suddenly i see it. the heading is "these blogs deserve more attention" and there's only one listed. MINE! eeeek! ok, don't get too excited. clearly this is a trick. i bet a random blog name pops up every time someone looks at her site. so i refresh the page several zillion times, waiting for someone else to get this honourable mention. but it's still me. perhaps she just has some special widget installed so that whoever looks at her site has their own blog title inserted there. how deviously clever. but maybe she's like the pretty girl in can't buy me love and she's going to make me popular by telling people i'm cool! i'll be her patrick dempsey! i can't remember how that story ends, but i'm sure the moral of it was that life is better when you're popular.

this reminds me of a day in high school when the cute boy all the girls crushed on leaned over in chemistry class and said "psst... amanda" and then told me some joke or something. holy crap, i thought, he's talking to me. he knows my name! of course this was a ridiculous thought, we'd been going to school together for years, of course he knew my name.

i've never been cool. as a teenager, i had scraggly hair, scrawny chicken legs, big buck teeth and far too many shirts with snoopy on them. i'm still a nerd now, just with straight teeth and less cartoons on my clothes. but i still get that dorky rush of excitement when someone acknowledges my existence.

so do what she said and pay more attention to me. she knows what she's talking about; she's cool! come on, jump on my slow moving bandwagon! and do it before she reads this post and hastily recants her endorsement.

look how cool snoopy is, with his shades and sweater and thumb.

i mean business

i'm feeling very grown up once again, but this time it's ok. tomorrow i'm going on my first ever work-related trip. woo! off to close a big deal in tokyo? important meeting with investers in new york? ribbon-cutting ceremony in paris? no, not quite... training in regina!! ok, so maybe i'm not a suit-clad, high-powered, influential jetsetter, but calling this a business trip sounds cool, so just let me have it.

i'm gone for 10 days, and i realize it will probably get very boring, but i'm still looking forward to it. at least parts of it. staying in a hotel is fun. i don't have to worry about grocery shopping or preparing meals while i'm away. and it'll be a change from my normal workday, which is always good. of course if i were a real business lady, i'd have a laptop, and then everything would be fine. i could sit in my hotel room and use their free wi-fi to do all my important businessy things. like play on facebook or read and write blogs. but i don't have a laptop. oh my god i'm going to go through web withdrawal! no facebook stalking or playing Zuma or checking my stats every few hours to see with disappointment that i have no new hits or comments (hint hint). what the hell am i supposed to do? i need to be plugged in, online, wired! well, maybe a bit of internet detox will be good for me.

besides, it'll be nice to come back to all the comments that i'm sure will have been left for me, lamenting my absence, and beseeching a speedy return. right? right??

god bless the gentiles

the christian singles, to be specific.

i logged in to my blog today to see if i had any new comments, but alas, there were none. so i went to check my stats, to see if anyone had even been on my site today, certain my visitor count would be next to none. but jumpin jehosephat, i had 30 hits! don't scoff, that's a busy day for me. i'm not one of the popular cool kids, so don't make fun. anyhoo, where was i? oh right, jehosephat. i was shocked. where were these people coming from? time to check out the referring sites that led them to me. one view came from another blog that i frequent, but the remaining 29 came from some weird long link that was unfamiliar to me. so of course i clicked it.

ChristianMingle dot com. with a cute little jesus fish in the logo. what the-? how on earth did people go from being on a christian dating site to reading a sarcastic jewish girl's blog? hmm.... well i did have the word "jesus" in a recent title.... still doesn't make sense. but i don't care; thirty hits, woohoo! so i threw in a little 'god bless' and 'jehosephat' for my new religious pals.

sadly though, my blog doesn't have the same fancy features as ChristianMingle, like christian dating tips, searchable bible, or bible verse of the day. But i will leave you with these wise words:

jail tires me out

i left the penitentiary mid-afternoon, stepping out to one of the most beautiful days i've seen in ages. i took in deep breaths of air, relishing my freedom. it was over. thank god it was over; i don't think i could have lasted any longer. thinking back, it wasn't so long ago that i entered the joint - nervous, scared, heart pounding - yet it felt so much longer. but that didn't matter now, it was all behind me. it may have been unpleasant, but i would try to learn from the experience. mentally exhausted, i drove back to the city, the prison slowly disappearing into the distance behind me. it had been just over an hour.

i had a job interview at our penitentiary. i hate interviews, regardless of location.

pick on someone your own size

at 5'3", it's not often that i'm taller than anyone, but it does happen occasionally. and when it does.... well.... it's just weird. my brain feels confused at the downward angle of my eyes and the view of the top of someone's head. what's happening here? it thinks. are you standing on a step? is that person in a hole? this is unfamiliar and disturbing, do something to make it normal! slouch, sit down, back up a few meters, anything!!! i get all awkward knowing i'm taller, it's all i'm aware of, and i suddenly feel like a lumbering giant. i want to be nonchalant about it. oh? there's a height difference? i hadn't noticed. but oh god, they can see it in my eyes; they know i know they're shorter than me!

the other day in my kickboxing class i got paired up with a girl who must be 4'11", tops. ok amanda, be cool, act natural. we introduce ourselves and i try to pretend that i can't see over her head. subconsciously, i hold back a bit on my kicks and punches. after all, i'm a towering amazon, she's a delicate little flower. sadly, although perhaps not surprisingly, she kicked my butt. i like to think we probably have the same amount of strength and power, but hers just seems more intense because it's concentrated into a smaller package. yeah... that's definitely it. i could totally take her if i were her size.

birthday musings

i don't really have much to muse about, but i've got 25 minutes to kill
before the online jeopardy test begins. yup, i'm an uber-nerd, working
my birthday plans around taking a test for a quiz show. but it'll
totally be worth it when i beat ken jennings' record as all time
jeopardy champ and undeniable trivia guru.

so my birthday has been pretty good so far. both my mom and dad called
and sang me happy birthday this morning, as per long standing
tradition. i had a nice walk to work. i had a good day for calls. i was
taken out for a couple of beers after work. and now i'm waiting
anxiously for the jeopardy test. alex trebek is looking right at me as
the clock counts down. 18:00 minutes to go, eek!

and of course i forgot my glasses at work. i NEVER forget my glasses,
but it's inevitable i would on a day i want them. but now when i fail
miserably i'll just blame it on poor eyesight.

alright, the waiting is driving me bonkers. i'm going to pace around for a bit. wish me luck...

airport adieus

This one's for my aunt, who always asks why i don't write on here more.

lately, it's just because i've been so busy getting ready for the big trip. i am getting so excited! my heart is racing, my blood rushing, i am filled with such energy it's all i can do not to jump around whooping and hollering! today we dropped my sister off at the airport. her fiance left last week, now she's gone. that's two down. slowly, one by one, we are all departing; making our way to israel. and with each person that goes, it is closer to my turn. it reminds me of that song with the bears in the bed. "there were 10 in the bed and the little one said, Roll over! Roll over! so they all rolled over and one fell out, there were 9 in the bed and the little one said..." etc etc.

at the airport, we followed our family's usual traditions. first we grabbed some Tim Horton's coffees and sat down to chat and laugh. then we all huddled outside the departure area in a group hug, followed by individual hugs. but that's not the end of the goodbyes. we stand on our side of the rope and watch as jennie goes through security, waving every time she looks back. she clears security, waves to us again, and heads toward the gate. still, we are not finished. at the other end of the terminal, we stand at the top of the staircase and watch across the baggage area, through the glass windows to the gate area. jennie appears and we all wave to each other. we carry on like this for about 10 minutes, waving, doing little dances, and miming out stupid things like paddling a canoe, going down an elevator etc. it's all so ridiculous and drawn out. we laugh till our faces hurt, and then, finally, we turn and head out.

it's silly and cheesy and dorky. and i love it.

change in the air

that time has come again. the changing of the bus drivers. i guess they do it fairly regularly, changing everyone's routes. it seems to all happen at once, one large city-wide shift. suddenly my routine is disrupted. no more kind, mustachioed bus driver who always waits for me when he sees me waving on the other side of the street, always ready with my transfer. no more shiny, applehead bus driver trying to make small talk about american idol and saying 'see you tomorrow'. i'll miss those guys. they were good bus drivers.

at first i was imagining it like the changing of the guard, but that was too uptight and formal. the changing of the bus drivers is a much more mystical phenomenon. no one knows it's coming and no one sees it happen. it's like the movie Dark City, where the city mutates and people all mysteriously change lives overnight. but no, that's a bit too dark, the changing of the bus drivers is magical! maybe it's like mary poppins. the wind changes and up go all the bus drivers, floating down silently on umbrellas, settling into their new buses.

yes, i like that.

my other life

today i played make-believe. it all started because of the coat. i feel
all stylish in it, way more stylish than regular me, so clearly that
makes me want to pretend to be someone other than regular me.

on the way to work i was just some generic high-powered business lady
(i hadn't fully settled in to the land of make believe). i stood with
better posture, i walked with more urgency, i was very very important.
of course this was no longer winnipeg. it was just some fictional
uber-cool and happening city in which it is perfectly acceptable for
wealthy, influential business ladies to ride the bus.

as i got off the elevator, i realized exactly what i did. i worked with
spies! i have a high-tech swipe card to get me into all the restricted
areas, a zillion programs to open with a zillion passwords, and half
the time i write in a code only my co-workers and i understand. and i
wear a headset; i'm totally in with the spies!!

work was much more exciting as a spy. i grabbed my spy coffee from the
kitchen for spies and sat at my desk logging in to all my spy
databases, waiting to get calls from spies in need of my help.

it was a busy day sending out crucial documents, giving spies new
identities, retrieving passcodes to dismantle missiles, battling
corruption and evil villains for the good of the country - nay, the
world! etc etc.

on my walk home, i didn't quite feel like a spy anymore. i was back in
uber-cool and happening madeupsville. i saw my reflection in a window
and was no longer nondescript rich business lady. i was now a talented,
up and coming young journalist, eking out a scant living, but refusing
to compromise my integrity!

i love my coat.

have you seen this sock??

i didn't think it would come to this, i always maintained hope that it
would find its way back to me on its own. when i first noticed it was
missing i thought nothing of it. it'll turn up, i thought. but after
several loads of laundry and still no sock, i began to get concerned. i
searched my closet and the laundry room but found nothing. how is this
possible? where had it gone? why didn't i take its disappearance
seriously from the start? now it's out there somewhere, cold and alone.
i hope it's okay. i just want it to come back unharmed and in one
piece. it was always such a dependable sock... while all my other socks
wore down or got snagged on a nail in my floor, this one remained
strong and unbroken!

i put this poster up in our stairwell, in the hopes that someone will
spot the little guy hidden away somewhere and all will be well again.
but i fear the outlook is bleak. i'm sure your thoughts are with me
during this dark and difficult time.

yeah, this is what i do for fun...

yeehaw, alberta!

went to edmonton for a long weekend. there was no reason except to get
out of the city for a bit, forget about everything and enjoy the open
road.

beef jerky, potato chips and coffee: road trip breakfast of champions.
got lost leaving Saskatoon, totally missed our turn as we were too busy
playing games. after about 30 mins, i commented "i wouldn't mind seeing
a sign saying highway 16 soon" and david mentioned that he hadn't
noticed any semis on this road. Hmm.... Turned around and headed back,
and got on the right road. haha, we laughed, silly us!

edmonton was great. found a dingy motel, right next to a large sign
warning us it was a "high theft area". our door took a bit of
maneuvering to close, looking like it had been busted in a few times.
haha, we laughed, what a terrible place!

edmonton activities:
- shopping. about 12 hours worth. credit card saw a lot of action. feet ached.
- waterpark. slides, wave pool, tubes. so much fun.
- visiting friends i haven't seen in years. fantastic to catch up! wish i had more time
- playing poker for several hours. 2nd place both times, damn!!
- wearing our new hats and pretending to be cowboys. yes, we're nerds.

and back on the road for another 13 or so hours. more beef jerky, more
coffee. got lost in saskatoon once again, this time totally not our
fault. who would think that "Circle Rd" dead ends? we followed it
expecting it to take us around the city, but instead it changed into
some weiny little back road. WHAT KIND OF CIRCLE IS THAT?? we
contemplated buying a map, but decided against it. who needs maps? not
these two cowpokes!

finally got back to the city around midnight, exhausted and
delirious... and not wanting to step foot in a mall or look at beef
jerky for a very long time!

"best before"... merely a suggestion

i posted this yesterday on facebook, but i think it's kinda funny, so i'm posting here too. yeah, that's right, i just arrogantly proclaimed myself to be funny. whatcha gonna do about it?

i should probably stop eating expired food. one of these days i'll pay the price.

opened the fridge to check out the dire food situation. wow, nothing.
but i'm starving and safeway is all the way across the street. surely i
can make do with the odds and ends before me.

two eggs: expired 10 days ago. totally close enough.
cheese: still good!
pepperoni: hmm, expiry date rubbed off, can't even remember when i bought it... but it seems fine.
canned olives: i don't think they ever go bad.

whip up a little omelet. could use some sort of condiment on the side. no ketchup, no salsa. what else could i try?

dollop of sour cream: expired 9 days ago. perfectly fine, no green fuzz.
blob of bbq sauce: expired a month ago. whatever, as if bbq sauce expires, i just plain old don't believe them.

seems like a somewhat odd combination of things, but it all tastes
good. i am reminded of an episode of friends when joey eats rachel's
meaty dessert trifle. if you like all the ingredients separately, why
not together? i think that's how my tastebuds work. after all, i used
to pour milk on my toast and maple syrup on my french fries.

so far no signs of impending vomit or dysentery. i think i have a pretty tough stomach. safe again, ergo no lesson learned!

nodding off

so tired today. we're in training all day and it is just so exhausting. read read read.... it's so hard to keep my eyes open.

it was a really close game at the pub quiz last night. we were just one point off of first place, and if we'd tied again like last week we would have won the tie-breaker. Oh, so close!! and there was one answer we really should have gotten. something about an advice columnist whose real name was esther somethingorother. the team was divided between dear abby and ann landers. i was fairly certain that abby's real name was abigail van buren, but majority ruled and the ann landers camp was outnumbered 7-5. victory could have been ours! oh well, there's always next week.

went to grab a muffin at the beginning of break and saw two guys walking along with mini heinekin kegs. it's 10am! no doubt their day will be infinitely more fun than mine.

update:

haha, check out my "currently reading" box to the left. i provided a description as well. boy, i'm hilarious.

victory!!

every tuesday, my friends and i go to a pub quiz. we have consistently come in third. Last week we pulled ahead, winning round one (and nachos!), but dropping to second over all. but this tuesday, change was in the air. we tied for fourth in the first round, nothing to be proud of. but round two we felt we had a shot. the tension around the table was palpable as the top five teams were announced. "and for the first time, we have a tie for first place..." oh my god, could it be? YES!!! We were tied for the win! But there are no ties, only one team can be crowned champion. Down to the tie breaker question - which we've never had to use. my friend is ridiculously good at the tie breakers, always coming within metres of estimating mountain heights etc. this week's question was to name the date Sputnik was launched. the answer was given, and as soon as the announcer read the other team's response, we erupted in shouts and cheers. we were only a couple of weeks off!!! WE WON!!! Mayhem ensued, our team being unfamiliar with the taste of victory.

it was a fun night, we should win more often. i love the unjustified feeling of superiority, based on sporadic knowledge of useless trivia.
